What's the difference between an electronic dog and a monk practicing cultivation in the secular world?

Have you noticed that if you really think about it, working on hardware circuits and power development is highly compatible with spiritual practice and becoming a monk.

1. You Have to Learn to Let Go of Obsessions

The most tormenting part of circuit design is obsession: always wanting the perfect topology, hoping component parameters will be exactly right, and insisting that debugging should succeed on the first try.

It’s like letting go of delusions in spiritual practice.

You debug Buck/Boost circuits and MPPT loops. In theory, the parameters are perfect, but as soon as power is applied, there’s oscillation, strange noise, or abnormal behavior under load; you repeatedly measure waveforms, revise the PCB, and swap components.

In the end, you gradually realize that there is no absolutely ideal circuit. You learn to accept tolerances, make trade-offs, avoid forcing perfection, and understand compromise in design. With fewer obsessions, bugs often become easier to find.

2. Long Meditation Sessions = Long, Tedious Debugging Sessions

Monks sit in silent meditation; we sit in front of an oscilloscope, staring at waveforms for hours.

While others unwind after work, you’re still comparing Bode plots, tuning PID coefficients, troubleshooting Miller oscillation, bootstrap negative voltage, and parasitic interference.

Most of the time, there are no immediate results. It’s a long, quiet, lonely process of trial and error. If you can’t stand being alone with it, you simply won’t make it.

3. Look Inward to See the Unseen “Formless Things”

Monks observe the stray thoughts in their own minds;

We deal with the invisible enemies in a circuit: parasitic inductance in traces, distributed capacitance, ground-loop interference, and high-frequency coupled noise.

The schematic may look flawless, only to be ruined by PCB parasitics. You can’t see them with the naked eye; you can only rely on instruments and reasoned experience, much like observing formless thoughts.

4. Let Go of Restlessness and Quick Wins

Switching power supply loops and digital compensators are most vulnerable to impatience.

If you start by aggressively tuning PID parameters or randomly replacing inductors and capacitors, things will only get more chaotic.

It’s like observing precepts: slow down and test layer by layer — first no load, then light load, then dynamic load, tracing the source step by step. Once your mind is scattered, even measurements can go wrong.

5. Everything Is Impermanent; Variables Are Always Present

Buddhism speaks of impermanence and dependent conditions; a circuit is a bundle of “dependent combinations.”

A change in temperature, input voltage fluctuations, or differences between component batches can suddenly cause a stable circuit to fail.

There is no one-and-done solution. You always need to leave margin, think through protection mechanisms, accept variables brought by the environment, and adjust accordingly.

6. A Sense of Solitude

Many hardware problems are hard for anyone else to fully empathize with.

Loop oscillation, EMC non-compliance, and soft-switching failures usually mean you’re on your own, slowly making sense of waveforms. It’s hard for anyone to immediately point the way out.

Spiritual practice is your own affair; realization has to come from within. Others can offer hints, but they can’t cross the difficult passage for you.

The ancients said, “All worldly affairs are a training ground.” Your oscilloscope, LTspice, and PCB layout software are your meditation hall.

Every sleepless afternoon spent debugging circuits is meditation.

There’s still a real difference: when masters shave their heads, it’s a voluntary entry into monastic life, cutting off the “three thousand strands of worldly troubles.” We hardware folks, on the other hand, stay up day and night drawing schematics and debugging, which leads to involuntary “physical monasticism” (meaning our hair falls out) :joy:. But you’re right, OP: every time I power up a board for the first time, the silent prayer in my heart—“Buddha, please don’t let it blow up”—is more devout than any high monk’s. Sir, you’ve attained enlightenment. My Buck converter is whining again, so I’d better go perform a rite for it.

I definitely didn’t expect to find spiritual enlightenment on an EE forum today, but here we are. :folded_hands: But hey, my “meditation hall” (Altium Designer) keeps crashing and giving me error codes, does that mean my karma is bad or I’m failing my spiritual practice? Seriously though, this is a beautiful post. It just proves that the pain and suffering of hardware design are universal across all languages and cultures!

I read this and laughed. Isn’t this basically my state every day? :joy: But the OP missed one point: electronic dogs also need to cultivate “merit”—that is, leave margin in the circuit. Choose capacitors with twice the voltage rating, give the MOSFET enough SOA margin, and add another 30% thermal headroom. Isn’t that accumulating hidden virtue? You don’t notice it most of the time, but when it matters, it saves your life.

There’s another difference the OP didn’t really spell out: when monks finish their cultivation, they can save all sentient beings. When we finish ours… well, we just help the boss sell a few more machines, while we keep working overtime debugging the next issue :rofl: But honestly, after you’ve been in this line of work long enough, your mindset really does change. When I was younger, I could rant for half an hour at a board that had blown up. Now if it blows, it blows; first I cut the power and start troubleshooting, calm and collected. Maybe that’s the “worldly cultivation” the OP was talking about.
